2007 Luna Vineyards Petite Sirah |

VineyardA descendent of Syrah and Peloursin, Petite Sirah is a deeply colored grape that produces big wines with amazing structure. Our Petite Sirah grapes come from the very small Suisun Valley appellation, just east of the Napa County line. The sandy-soiled vineyard sits at an elevation of 200 feet, in a cool, marine-influenced climate. In 2007, we enjoyed a near perfect harvest, picking these grapes on September 28th. Winemaking Once the fruit was brought into the winery, it was hand sorted and de-stemmed. Fermentation occurred naturally for three weeks. We followed fermentation with an additional three weeks of maceration on the skins before pressing. This extended skin contact enabled us to extract the maximum amount of flavor and texture that the grapes could give. The wine was aged for twenty months in twenty-five percent new Hungarian oak barrels, and seventy-five percent once-used French oak barrels. The Hungarian oak barrels are known for giving great refinement to the tannins in this wine. Tasting Notes Our 2007 Petite Sirah is an intensely dark purple color, scented with coffee, chocolate and toasted oak. This elegant wine benefits from time to breathe before serving, to fully release its rich flavors of blackberry, blueberry, mocha, and plum. Pomegranate and pistachio emerge on the finish. Velvety tannins provide structure for this massive wine, which will only improve with five to fifteen years of cellaring |
