2006 Luna Vineyards Reserve Napa Valley Sangiovese |
||||||
VINEYARDThe fruit for our 2006 Reserve Sangiovese comes from the Game Farm Vineyard in Oakville. The vineyard lies in dense, stony subsoil that mimics mountain growing conditions. It was selected for its Brunello clone vines and shallow, rocky soil. In these soils, the Sangiovese struggles to produce the highest quality grapes possible. As in 2005, the 2006 Harvest was very late, with great hang time. The fruit was harvested over ten days, beginning on October 10th, at an average of 25.4 degrees Brix, under ideal harvest conditions. WINEMAKING Fermentation was allowed to occur naturally over a period of three weeks, without any added yeast or acid. The wine then spent another twenty-one days in an extended maceration before pressing. The extended skin contact allowed us to coax out the subtle nuances and mid-palate texture that we strive for in our Sangiovese. The superior barrels from the Game Farm lots are selected by our winemakers for the Reserve Sangiovese. This wine was aged for nineteen months in once-used French oak barrels from Billon and Bossuet. We bottled in June, 2008, without fining or filtration. TASTING NOTES Our 2006 Napa Valley Reserve Sangiovese is a rich garnet red. The aromas of black raspberries, red currants, and lavender scent the nose. On the palate, there is a juicy burst of cherry, accented by tealeaves and cocoa. The tannins are firm and velvety, seamlessly holding the wine together. The lush finish lingers with more sweet cherry, pomegranate, and dense, dark chocolate. This wine has an impressive ability to age for Sangiovese; it should be at its peak through 2017. |
