Wine and Paint Party Photo Highlights

Luna had a blast this past weekend painting vineyard-scapes and sipping wine at our first-ever Wine and Paint Party! Paint the Town Napa came out to lead us step by step in the painting process. With wine as our muse, we painted gorgeous masterpieces that were each unique in their own way.  Thanks to everyone who attended – until next year!

Valentine’s Dinner Photo Highlights

Thank you to all our guests who attended Luna’s first event of 2018, a romantic dinner in celebration of Valentine’s Day. This intimate evening began with a welcome reception of our 2013 Blanc de Noirs. The evening continued in the soft candlelit Reserve Room where individual tables were set for each pair.

Winemaker Shawna Miller made a surprise appearance and poured our newly bottled, unreleased 2017 Rosé of Sangiovese (such a delight). A toast followed as Chef Cristina Topham of Spread Catering set the stage for her exquisite menu. It was an incredible evening of delicious wines, culinary creations, and gathered loved wines. Our Valentine’s Dinner was an amazing start to our 2018 calendar of winery events – we hope to see you at the next one!

The History of Super Tuscan Wine

Luna’s signature red blend called, Canto is the culmination of an inspired vision, skillful winemaking and an intuitive search for the finest grapes. Rightfully named for its symphony of flavors, the Canto (poem, song) is a Super Tuscan blend. Although a customer favorite, the origins of Super Tuscan wines remain a mystery to many. We’re hear to shed some light on the unique origin of this cherished and unique wine.

Spice Crusted Duck Breast with Sour Cherry Gastrique Recipe

When you have a wine as powerful as our 2014 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon, finding a worthy food pairing can be daunting. Luckily, Chef Cristina Topham of Spread Catering Company was up for the challenge and she certainly delivered!

Chef Cristina created a recipe using ingredients inspired by the warm cooking spice aromas and dark fruit notes of this special Mountain-grown wine. Her Spice Crusted Duck Breast with Sour Cherry Gastrique perfectly complements this Cabernet while providing a balance to its intense structure.

Virginie Boone of Wine Enthusiast Magazine recently reviewed our 2014 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon noting that it is a “robustly crafted, powerfully concentrated experience, thick and hugely extracted in black fruit and black pepper.” It was also deemed highly collectible, receiving a Cellar Selection designation.

New Year, Same Amazing Winemaker

2018 marks winemaker, Shawna Miller’s seventh year at Luna Vineyards. She began her winemaking odyssey in an unconventional manner by earning a degree in forestry from Virginia Tech. This nature lover became intrigued by enology, which led her to pursue an Extension Winemaking Certificate from the University of California, Davis.

For Shawna, a career in winemaking was a natural professional progression because her background in agriculture prepared her for some of the unglamorous aspects of the field, including the long, dirty harvest days in the cellar. She relishes the challenges associated with the harvest season.

Food and wine are important to Shawna as a means of connecting with family and friends. The wines she is crafting at Luna Vineyards are made in the true Italian spirit, namely, wines that are made to be part of delicious meals and great company at the table. In this tradition, the varietals she loves to work with most include Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petite Syrah.
